Since priests were special people on account of their close association with the holy things of God, they had some special rules that applied to them. The categories of holy, clean, and unclean often carried extra significance for priests, because God would tolerate no uncleanness in His presence.
The prohibitions against slaughtering a cow and its young on the same day are hard to understand except as a divine allowance for the suffering of animals. God was the first to kill animals (He made Adam and Eve clothes of animal skins), but the Israelites were to treat their animals as kindly as possibleâeven those that were to be sacrificed.
Read the New Testament reading a little extra slowly today and ask yourself how you, in your sinful moments, have (in effect) participated with those who tormented Christ. There were none to help as he died for sinners everywhere. This knowledge cannot leave you unchanged.
