Another set of plans were made during our planning meeting in February: when and what to eat! In the table below, each of the events is "after church" unless otherwise noted. Here are the "food events" that we planned:
| Date | Event | Description |
| March 23 | Easter Breakfast | Put on by the Youth Group, this year as a fundraiser for the Glory Bound trip in November. |
| April 27 | Pig Roast | Now in its third year, the pig roast has been a hit from the start. Cooking starts the night before. |
| May 25 | Wiener Roast | Kick off the summer right! If you are in town for Memorial day, this picnic-like meal will be the first of its kind here at Resurrection. |
| August 17 | Ice Cream Social | (Mid-afternoon event) Come and enjoy home-made ice cream and games while it's hot outside! |
| September 7 | Church Picnic | (Off site church service) On rally day, we begin our Sunday School year with a bang in 2008-2009 with a picnic to be held off-site. Even church will be outside that day! |
| October 5 | International Food | A "special themed" pot-luck with international food being featured. Part of LWML Sunday with its emphasis on missions. |
| October 26 | Fish Fry | By now a tradition and a congregational favorite. "Invite a friend" Sunday and come to enjoy fresh-fried catfish and all the fixings. |
| November 16 | Chili Cookoff | An informal, light-hearted contest for the best chili recipe where we all win, because we all enjoy the efforts! |
| Dec. 3 Dec. 10 Dec. 17 | Advent Suppers | Most of us know the drill by now: Soup, Finger food, Salad, Dessert, and great fellowship midweek as we prepare for Christmas |

We had a congregational meeting this past February 15 that everyone was invited to. The purpose of the meeting was to set goals and do some strategic planning. Many thanks to those who helped put on a delicious dinner to get us started. We did our best to stick to business, and we set some goals that we hope will keep us going.
In order to facilitate discussion, we began with our mission statement. You can read the mission statement right here on the web site (it's on our home page). Then we asked, "which activities advance the mission directly, and which ones do it indirectly?"
Activities that directly support our mission are things that reach out to the community, spread the Gospel, and reach out to others. Activities that indirectly support our mission build us up to equip us to do the main work. Both types of activities are important, but there must be a mix for us to be most effective.
We also dealt with the reality that we are a small church, and that it is easy to sign up for too many goals and water down our efforts. So, we worked for a realistic list of goals that were direct and indirect. Here's what we came up with:
| Directly Support Mission | Indirectly Support Mission |
| Lifelight | Pot Lucks/Social |
| Engage with/support local community agencies: Good Samaritan Center Needs Council Boys & Girls Club Food Bank | Parking Lot Study |
| Vacation Bible School | Back Yard Project |
| Hospitality Volunteers | Paint Classrooms |
| Friendship Sunday | Landscaping |
This is an ambitious set of goals, and we pray that God would strengthen us to achieve them. Our calendar now has all the food events we scheduled posted on it.

Our last Bible study went pretty well. Concordia's "Faith on the Edge" series made a good debut here at Resurrection. The topic we chose, though, "Heaven and Hell" seemed kind of, well, traditional. This time, we'll try something a little more daring.
The study we're doing next is called "Playing God." In six sessions, it explores the ethics of “perfecting” humanity through DNA, cloning, stem cell research, and more. Specific chapters include:
We've had some good discussions using this series' materials. If you haven't come to adult Bible class before (or you've fallen out of the habit), now is a good time to try it again. You'll be blessed with a deeper understanding of some of the pressing issues of our time.

Concordia Publishing House has come out with a "Faith on the Edge" series and our adult Bible class will be trying one out during the Epiphany season this year. Jesus spoke about heaven and about hell much more than some folks suppose, and yet a number of feelings have grown around the afterlife, some of which are true, and some of which are not.
The "Faith on the Edge" series seeks to incorporate contemporary discussions involving science and faith. Here is a passage from the introduction to the series, as printed in the Study Guide:
The Faith on the Edge Bible study series tracks the progress of science and people's fascinations and fears about science. Each session introduces a contemporary topic, summarizes what science has to say about it, and then provides biblical answers and guidance so that you can face the future with the widsom and confidence that only God can provide through His Word."
Plan on coming to this series. The first week begins on January 6.

We'll be celebrating new members formally joining us on November 11. Most of the people you'll see are folks you already know, but they will be taking the formal step of standing before God and pledging their support for His work here at Resurrection. It is a joyful day; you should try to be here if you can.
Also, after church we will be having a chili cookoff. In the past, this has been a really fun event. Plan on brining a pot of your favorite chili to share with others. It'll be our way of celebrating God's gifts to us, His family here at Resurrection.

Every year for quite a while, the Fredericksburg churches get together around thanksgiving to organize a non-perishable food drive to support the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. Historically, this was an event that was first organized and pushed by youth leaders, so even after all these years, Christian youth are still a big part of this citywide effort.
The Ministerial Association here in town has continued to sponsor and support this effort even after the youth ministers in the county stopped meeting formally years ago. This year, Pastor Ed has signed Resurrection up to help by volunteering us to cover the area roughly from Stone Ridge down through the Mini-Mart, going back to Morning Glory.
The food drive involves two steps, usually taken on Sunday afternoons.
This is a fun event, especially if the weather is nice.
We're looking for a volunteer to organize the details of this food drive. Any ages of involvement are welcome.

Pastor Ed is an instructor for Concordia's intensive Bachelor's-degree program in business administration. He has taught a New Testament and Old Testament survey classes. For Tuesday evenings in October, he will be teaching a class on Christian Ethics as part of that program. Talk to him for more information; in the past, we've had people from the congregation sit in on some of the sessions.
Update: This class will meet at the High School. Contact Pastor Ed for details.

In the August Newsletter, there was an article asking for comment about the Lifelight Bible study series. Since then, there have been discussions at church council meetings, a Sunday school hour dedicated to talking about it, and a dinner where more details were discussed. This month, at the regular voters' meeting, there will be some motions presented and some decisions to be reached about how to go forward.
While the prospect of an outreach-oriented Bible study is exciting for a church like ours, it is also a big risk. In order to succeed, we will need to have commitments of time, talent, and treasure which are both significant and beyond what we have been doing to keep our basic programs going. It is time, this month, to spend a period in prayer for the correct, and God-pleasing decision. Do we move forward with this, or do we wait for another opportunity? Have we done what Jesus urges us and count the cost, before we begin something which has the potential to be a public humiliation for the congregation?
Please take some time and pray for God's guidance in these important decisions. Then, plan on coming to the voters' meeting to discuss this matter. You don't need to be a voting member to come and voice your opinion. While we take votes, our congregation really works by consensus. Come and be heard, and pray before you speak.

October 28 is on our calendar as a mission festival here at Resurrection. We are privileged to have Dr. Glenn O'Shoney as our speaker that day. Dr. O'Shoney is a president emeritus of the Texas District of the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod. He also worked for years as a mission executive in St. Louis at the synodical level. So, when he comes to inform us about current mission efforts, he brings with him extensive knowledge and experience.
Dr. O'Shoney will be here for Bible class at 9:00 and will also give the message during the worship service. Please plan on coming for these events and learning more about what our group of Lutheran Churches is doing to spread the gospel throughout the world and also right here in Texas.
After church, we will have a fried catfish lunch. You'll more about that as the time approaches, but initial plans are already being made. Everyone has enjoyed these meals in the past, so plan on coming, and bringing a friend. This is a week you just won't want to miss.

This past summer, we did two video Bible studies from a Focus on the Family study called, "that the world may know." Several of the participants really enjoyed themselves and learned a good deal from this series, which combines video material taken in the Holy Land with Bible study and reflection.
We've decided to continue this series into the fall. Starting this Sunday, we'll do another Bible study in this series. This one is called "Lessons from the Holy Land." It promises to be more of the same video and discussion that we've already enjoyed.
If you haven't attended one of these studies, you owe it to yourself to try it out. The discussions have been stimulating, and the material itself is very well presented. Come and see for yourself why these video Bible studies are back by popular demand!
